But not long after joining a pageant on a whim in college, she became the first prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of El Paso\u2019s Richard Guy and Rex Holt, known as the \u201cKings of Beauty\u201d\u2014just as the 1970\u2019s counterculture movement began to take off.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n A pink, rose-covered gown\u2014a Guyrex creation\u2014symbolizes the fairy tale life that young women in Jane\u2019s time imagined beauty queens had. Its near destruction exposes reality: the author\u2019s failed relationship with her mother, and her parents\u2019 failed relationship with one another. Her books have won numerous awards, including two Spur Awards, two Caroline Bancroft History Prizes, and the Barbara Sudler Award; she has also been a finalist for the Women Writing the West\u2019s Willa Literary Award, High Plains Book Award, Oklahoma Book Award, and Foreword Review and Sarton Book awards, both in women\u2019s studies.
