Must it be a specific place, or can it be anywhere that we feel safe and can hang onto a sense of belonging? Why do we eagerly (or angrily) leave home and then try to return after almost everything we remember has changed?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{213}\" paraid=\"342960310\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{227}\" paraid=\"1412662576\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Chapman&#8217;s book offers forty-nine poems and facing illustrations anchored around the theme &#8220;Seeking Home in a Troubled World.&#8221; And she has put some courageous creativity into her decision to structure each poem as a fourteen-line unrhymed sonnet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{227}\" paraid=\"1412662576\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{237}\" paraid=\"1468624815\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Many potential readers likely struggled through the sonnets of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century poets such as Edmund Spenser, John Donne, and John Milton in high school or college English classes. Chapman&#8217;s sonnets, however, offer a clear, modern focus, with titles such as &#8220;The Influencer Who Fell to Earth&#8221; and &#8220;Bearing Witness to Falling Trees.&#8221; She also uses almost no punctuation, relying instead on the rhythms of words within sentences to provide separation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{237}\" paraid=\"1468624815\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{251}\" paraid=\"1317953528\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">The first eight lines of her sonnet &#8220;Billionaires in Space&#8221; deliver a compelling example of her approachable writing style:&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d54be58-f6ef-4ffa-841d-4a1c0304e616}{251}\" paraid=\"1317953528\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{2}\" paraid=\"1191480653\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Billionaires in Space&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{8}\" paraid=\"346924418\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">I&#8217;m not sure what passes for a miracle these days&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{14}\" paraid=\"1689459259\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">When the veil between heaven and earth is lifted&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{20}\" paraid=\"1174550401\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">And billionaires aim to rocket into weightlessness&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{26}\" paraid=\"1578640175\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">While burning off a small sliver of their fortunes&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{32}\" paraid=\"1594530640\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Leaving the rest of us craning our necks upward&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{38}\" paraid=\"888484535\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">As we are weighted down with our cares but&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{44}\" paraid=\"1034381946\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Hoping for a sign that all&#8217;s right with the world&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{50}\" paraid=\"1521259916\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">That is the only world we have at the moment&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{56}\" paraid=\"703726537\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{60}\" paraid=\"1149767011\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Her collection&#8217;s title word <em>querencia<\/em> has several home-related meanings in Spanish, including &#8220;a favorite place.&#8221; Oddly, the word evolved from a deadly sport: bullfighting. <em>Querencia<\/em> refers to a small area within the deadly ring where a bull temporarily senses safety, and it will defend it as its &#8220;home&#8221; turf once the next confrontations with the matador begin.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{60}\" paraid=\"1149767011\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{76}\" paraid=\"846618845\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Most people likely would prefer to have a <em>querencia<\/em> that is <em>much<\/em> more permanent. Yet, no matter how much time, effort, and money are spent, physical homes can be lost in an instant.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{162}\" paraid=\"2012747582\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{ddc52192-6f7b-4d5f-8dc0-5417cd3d9574}{180}\" paraid=\"60853467\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Wars, wildfires, climate change, economic turmoil, and large-scale disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes leave millions of people homeless, with almost no belongings or financial resources to help them start over.
