She was also the Pearl LeWinn Endowed Chair in creative writing at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), as well as UTSA\u2019s poet in residence since 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{e9b09ad9-2186-4688-9ed8-dbb20cf743a0}{176}\" paraid=\"1285628355\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{e9b09ad9-2186-4688-9ed8-dbb20cf743a0}{212}\" paraid=\"135251871\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Born in Summit, New Jersey, Wendy Barker received her doctor of philosophy in 1981 from the University of California-Davis and began teaching in UTSA\u2019s English department in 1982. She founded both UTSA\u2019s creative writing program and its Creative Writing Reading Series that has brought many well-known writers to the UTSA campus.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{e9b09ad9-2186-4688-9ed8-dbb20cf743a0}{212}\" paraid=\"135251871\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{5}\" paraid=\"1115025653\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Her novel, <em>Nothing Between Us: The Berkeley Years<\/em>, was written in poetic style, and she authored a scholarly study, <em>Lunacy of Light: Emily Dickinson and the Experience of Metaphor<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{5}\" paraid=\"1115025653\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{31}\" paraid=\"745143994\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Her most recent book, <em>Weave: New and Selected Poems<\/em>, (BkMk Press, 2022), was preceded by seven full-length collections of poetry, including <em>Gloss<\/em>, published by Saint Julian Press in 2020. Her collection <em>One Blackbird<\/em> <em>at a Time<\/em> received the John Ciardi Prize for Poetry and was published by BkMk Press in 2015. Her sixth poetry chapbook, <em>Those Roads, These Moons<\/em>, will be published this spring by Alabrava Press.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{31}\" paraid=\"745143994\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{89}\" paraid=\"737164892\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Wendy Barker\u2019s poems and translations have appeared in numerous literary journals, including <em>Poetry, The Southern Review, The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review<\/em>,<em> Plume, Rattle, The American Scholar<\/em>, <em>The Kenyon Review, Nimrod, Stand, Partisan Review<\/em>, <em>Michigan Quarterly Review, New Letters, Antioch<\/em>, and <em>Southern Poetry Review<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{89}\" paraid=\"737164892\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{165}\" paraid=\"148254969\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">In a 2016 interview for the campus publication <em>UTSA Today<\/em>, she described the origins of her deep love for poetry. \u201cWhen I was a schoolgirl, my father would stand up in the living room and read aloud from his old, battered poetry anthology from high school,\u201d Barker said. \u201cI would sit transfixed. I was so moved. He would never quiz me. He would just stop and say, \u2018Isn\u2019t that beautiful?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{165}\" paraid=\"148254969\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{eede4fb9-d7fc-4c07-b6dc-da25cb2e066e}{185}\" paraid=\"2010533241\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\">Survivors include her husband, Steven G.
