Many variables play into dialogue\u2014personality, culture, education, genre, and all the other aspects of a specific story in an extraordinary story world. And guidelines help us choose the right words at the right time for the right character. More stress for the writer, but help is on the way! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n When should a writer weave action and dialogue, and when should they not? The key word is pacing. If we need to speed up the scene, eliminate the gestures and action and let the verbal communication fly. Weigh the character\u2019s goal for the scene and write an unpredictable line of dialogue. Your readers will appreciate your diligence to your craft. All they will remember is that your dialogue hit the amazing mark. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Clich\u00e9s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Avoid clich\u00e9s. Instead of a character relying on an overused phrase, look to the character\u2019s personality, genre, and life experiences to fashion an original metaphor or simile. A phrase unique to your character stays in the reader\u2019s memory long after the last sentence. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dialect <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Foreign language has the tendency to confuse readers. The best solution is to write only a word or short phrase in the non-English passage and show the meaning organically. Italicize the foreign spelling once. After the first instance, use the font that matches the rest of the text. Do this sparingly. If writing a foreign language is necessary, the following example shows how to incorporate the dialogue in a way the reader understands. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cBuenos dias<\/em>.\u201d The woman smiled. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGood morning to you, too.\u201d I said. \u201cLet me see if I can say this correctly. Buenos dias.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPerfect. Your Spanish is improving.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Be mindful of tossing a reader out of a story to show the writer is fluent in another language. Consider stating the characters spoke in non-English and writing the dialogue in English. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Another problem area in using dialect focuses on English idioms that don\u2019t translate to a foreign language. A foreign speaking character may not have the understanding or words to translate an English expression. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Italics<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Avoid the overuse of italics. My belief, as with the use of dialect, is that the slanted font tosses the reader out of the adventure. With the popularity of e-readers, italics are often hard to read. Why would a writer deliberately frustrate a reader? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Note that for a first-person point of view, internal thoughts are already assumed. For third-person point of view, use italics sparingly to pack a punch or reword the passage to first person. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n When in doubt about how to write italics, consult\u202fThe Chicago Manual of Style<\/em>.\u202fThe writer should write so the intended meaning is clear, which means the context determines usage. Refer to your publisher\u2019s style guide for further clarification.\u202f <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Less Is Always More<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Less is always more in dialogue. Add muscle and punch through powerful nouns and verbs that paint a vivid picture. If writers composed dialogue like we speak, readers would soon be bored. Imitate real speech with the knowledge that we don\u2019t speak in complete sentences. Sentence fragments and one-word dialogue relay what is meant without sounding stifled and formal. Don\u2019t be afraid to cut and revise. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Never use a ten-dollar word when a two-dollar word fits. I\u2019ve heard writers say they want to educate the reader and sending them to the dictionary is a good thing. Dear writer, with rare exception, the practice isn\u2019t wise when the technique diverts from the story and at times insults the reader. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Author intrusion occurs whenever the writer has a personal agenda and breaks up the dialogue with nonessential trivia or information such as the following: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Look at how much I know. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Research made this dynamic story possible. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Personal beliefs and opinions are my bandwagon. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Information dump that is unrealistic between characters. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n Parentheses <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Avoid parentheses. People don\u2019t talk or think in parentheses, so create your character\u2019s dialogue without them. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Profanity <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Choose how to handle profanity in dialogue. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Yes. Cursing is needed in my story to show a real character in a credible situation. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n No. My personal beliefs eliminate profanity. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n If you prefer not to include profanity, show how a character swears with creative word choices or state he\/she cursed. For example: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I hadn\u2019t heard that kind of language since my navy days. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n She swore like a sewer rat. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n \u201cYou no good\u2014\u201d He swore. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n She cursed but I ignored her. \u201cIs there anything else I can do for you?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n <\/p>\n Research <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Research the area where your character lives and the era in which your story takes place. Colloquial phrases and word choices differ from area to area, state to state, region to region. Visit the area and talk to those living there. Libraries, chambers of commerce, national and state parks, and visitor centers will have information not always available online. Write it right. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Silence<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Silence in dialogue needs a warning light. While the technique is an accepted part of communication and is proven to be effective, be careful not to overdo it. Allow only one character to employ solid listening skills with less to say. The character who applies silence may do so to manipulate the other character or characters to feel awkward or uncomfortable. In power-driven situations, a character may use silence to see how long it takes for the other character to respond. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Positive Silence <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The silent character can show a person of intelligence, a person who analyzes what others say and processes the information for good. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Silence is effective in preventing the continuation of verbal abuse. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n Negative Silence <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The silent character can take advantage of their listening skills for negative reasons. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Negative silence breaks down dialogue when problem solving is essential. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Silence in discussions that are relationship-oriented inhibits valuable communication. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n Trigger Phrases <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Avoid trigger phrases that are one-liners to encourage the original speaker to continue.
