{"id":2688,"date":"2021-11-28T10:45:22","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T10:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lonestar.a1professionals.net\/?p=2688"},"modified":"2021-11-28T11:37:51","modified_gmt":"2021-11-28T11:37:51","slug":"texas-education-agency-investigating-books-schools-texas-librarians-and-authors-respond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonestar.a1professionals.net\/?p=2688&lang=ar","title":{"rendered":"Texas Education Agency Investigating Books in Schools, Texas Librarians and Authors Respond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent devlopments in debate over books allowed in public schools<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">State Representative Matt Krause, acting as chair of the House Committee on General Investigating, notified the Texas Education Agency that he is \u201cinitiating an inquiry into Texas school district content,\u201d according to an October 25 letter obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/10\/26\/texas-school-books-race-sexuality\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\"><i>The Texas Tribune<\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><i>The Tribune<\/i> further states that, \u201cKrause&#8217;s letter provides a 16-page list of about 850 book titles and asks the districts if they have these books, how many copies they have and how much money they spent on the books.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">After this, Governor Abbott, \u201cdirected the Texas Education Agency, the State Board of Education, and the Texas Library and Archives Commission to develop standards to prevent the presence of what he called \u201cpornography and other obscene content\u201d in Texas schools,\u201d reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasstandard.org\/stories\/group-of-well-renowned-texas-authors-pens-open-letter-to-abbott-condemning-banned-book-list\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Texas Standard<\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Abbott then stepped things up with a letter to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath on Wednesday, November 10, calling on more immediate action while standards are being developed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/txla.org\/news\/campaign-to-support-diverse-books-is-a-viral-sensation\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">The Texas Library Association reports<\/a> the starting of a \u201csocial media campaign emphasizing support for diverse books and student access to books, launched by a group of Texas Library Association member librarians, was an astounding success, generating more than 13,000 tweets on Twitter with the hashtag #FReadom on Thursday, November 4. Nationally, it trended as high as 7th on Twitter\u2019s hot topics for the day. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Since that successful campaign, a website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freadom.us\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.freadom.us\/<\/a> has been launched, as well as the Twitter account @FReadomFighters; and there\u2019s now #FReadom Fridays to keep the momentum of this movement going.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">For the Texas Library Association, Carolyn Foote, a library consultant and a longtime TLA member says, \u201cOur goal was to energize teachers and librarians and authors. There are huge numbers of people out there who support diverse books and children\u2019s access to books.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">The Texas Institute of Letters also responded, penning <a href=\"https:\/\/texasinstituteofletters.org\/news\/TIL-Response-2021-Political-Attacks-on-Books.pdf\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">an open letter to the school districts in the State of Texas<\/a> that states, \u201cWe at the Texas Institute of Letters\u2014the Officers, Council Members, and Members\u2014stand against the vague, political attacks meant to intimidate school officials and librarians whose collections feature books by women, people of color, and LGBTQ writers. These attacks are preludes to book banning and censorship.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\">TIL continues, later saying, \u201cAnd who is the target of these destructive politics? Readers in marginalized communities who suddenly see the books that inspire them and give meaning to their lives threatened with banning. Parents who understand that fostering empathy is one of the most important achievements of reading widely.
