Manuel Gonzales, the judge for the 2020 prize, chose \u201cHillside Homes\u201d by <\/span><strong><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiondb.com\/author\/cassandra-garbus~44288.htm\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Cassandra Garbus<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#222222\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"color:#222222\">Gonzales writes, \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to articulate what I find so striking and compelling about \u2018Hillside Homes,\u2019 but I have read it more than a few times now, perhaps because of its simple and spare narrative voice, or the subtle emotional power that lives just under its surface, or its ability, with its granular attention to grief and love, to evoke something both familiar and heartbreaking\u2013but regardless, I am drawn back to it time and again.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong><span style=\"color:#444444\">Albertine Prize <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"color:#222222\">The Albertine Prize 2020 was awarded to&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.deepvellum.org\/collections\/all-inventory\/products\/muslim-a-novel\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u201cMuslim\u201d: A Novel<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#222222\">&nbsp;by&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:black\">Zahia Rahmani<\/span><span style=\"color:#222222\">. This novel, written in 2005, was translated into English by&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:black\">Matthew Reeck<\/span><span style=\"color:#222222\">&nbsp;in 2019 and published by Dallas\u2019s <\/span><strong><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepvellum.org\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Deep Vellum Publishing<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#222222\"> in 2020. It\u2019s one thing to write a novel. It\u2019s another thing to translate it into a different language. The Albertine Prize recognizes both jobs and awards the author and the translator.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"color:#222222\">The&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertine.com\/albertine-prize-2020\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Albertine Prize<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#222222\">, now in its fourth year, is awarded by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. and is supported by Van Cleef &amp; Arpels. A selection committee composed of a variety of US and French book industry professionals pick five French novels translated into English and published the previous year. Readers are invited to vote for their favorite book. The $10,000 prize is split between the author (receiving $8,000) and the translator (who receives $2,000.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Indie Author Project<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indieauthorproject.com\/indie-author-project-2020-contest-winners\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Indie Author Project<\/a><\/strong> (IAP) is a publishing community&nbsp;that includes public libraries, authors, curators, and readers working together to connect library patrons with great indie-published books. IAP has helped hundreds of libraries engage their local creative community and assisted in getting more than twelve thousand indie authors into their local libraries. Most importantly, the project has worked with top curation partners and librarians to identify hundreds of these as the best indie e-books available to readers\u2014so they can be sustainably circulated to library patrons with confidence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">The 2020 young-adult fiction winner is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780998830889?aff=LoneStarLit\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Einstein&#8217;s Compass: A YA Time Traveler Adventure<\/em><\/a><\/strong> by&nbsp;Grace Allison and&nbsp;Laren Bright, which was nominated by the Lubbock Public Library, and which Lone Star Lit hosted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/content\/recently-tour-einstein%E2%80%99s-compass\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0033ff\"><strong>blog tour<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The 2020 adult fiction winner is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781684334438?aff=LoneStarLit\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Sweet Jane<\/em><\/a><\/strong> by&nbsp;Joanne Kukanza Easley, which was nominated by Medina Community Library.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>2020 Texas Writer Award <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.demontheory.net\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Graham Jones<\/a><\/strong> is the recipient of the 2020 Texas Writer Award from the Texas Book Festival. Every year, the festival awards the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasbookfestival.org\/texas-writer-award\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Writer Award<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to one author who has significantly contributed to the state\u2019s literary landscape. These authors put Lone Star narratives on the national radar, connecting people everywhere to the depths and joys of Texas literature. Previous recipients include Attica Locke, James Magnuson, Dan Rather, and Benjamin Alire S\u00e1enz.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Jones is the author of eighteen novels, six story collections, two novellas, and a couple of comic books. Jones is a former NEA recipient, winner of the Jesse H. Jones Award for Best Work of Fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters, the Independent Publishers Award for Multicultural Fiction, and a Bram Stoker Award, among many others. A Blackfeet Native American, he was born in Midland, Texas, and holds degrees from Texas Tech University and the University of North Texas. He currently lives in Boulder, Colorado, where he serves as the Ivena Baldwin Professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong><span style=\"color:#44474e\">National Endowment for the Humanities&nbsp; <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"color:#44474e\">The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color:#44474e\"> (NEH) announced $32.8 million in grants to support&nbsp;<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/NEH%20December%202020%20grants%20state%20by%20state.pdf\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\">213 humanities projects in 44 states<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color:#44474e\">, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Seven grants were award in Texas for a total of $1,311,080.
