Carter Poetry Contest for Young Poets, co-sponsored by the&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickcarterhouse.org\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0563c1\">Maverick Carter House<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#1d2228\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/geminiink.org\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0563c1\">Gemini Ink Literary Arts Center<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span><u><span style=\"color:#0563c1\">. <\/span><\/u><span style=\"color:#1d2228\">Poems focused on the theme, \u201cThe Natural World of Texas.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:#1d2228\">Winning Best Overall Poem is Jacqueline Halld\u00f3rsson, a sophomore at Claudia Taylor Johnson High School, for \u201cOnly Texas Knows.\u201d The honor comes with a $1,000 prize. Second prize, with a $500 award, goes to Devyn Moore, a senior at the Young Women\u2019s Leadership Academy, for \u201cThe Life of a Rock.\u201d Third-prize winner is Thelo Lewis for \u201cOdyssey of the Sonne.\u201d Lewis is a senior at Health Careers High School.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:#1d2228\">The judges,&nbsp;chosen for their varied approaches to poetry and esteem in the literary community,&nbsp;chose the three top winners from twenty finalists, out of nearly 100 entries. Carter, who sponsors the contest with her brother Paul Carter. The competition honors Aline\u2019s championing of young writers through a similar contest in her lifetime and poetry readings at her family home, the historic Maverick Carter House, downtown.
