2020 Texas Institute of Letters inductees annouced<\/p>\n

For the eighty-fourth year, members of the <\/span><\/span>Texas Institute of Letters<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> (TIL) have <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>decided on the induction of new members to join the ranks of the distinguished honor society,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

founded in 1936 to celebrate Texas literature and to recognize distinctive literary achievement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The 2020 honorees include poets Cyrus Cassells, ir\u2019ene lara silva, Emmy P\u00e9rez, and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Loretta Diane Walker; award-winning playwrights Octavio Solis and Regina Taylor<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(also a Golden Globe winner); novelists Glenn Blake, Kathleen Kent, and Natalia Sylvester; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>bestselling journalists\/editors\/publishers Nate Blakeslee, Dan Goodgame, and Dan Williams; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>award-winning songwriters James McMurtry and Robert Earl Keen; environmental writer <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and editor Andrew Sansom; scholars Andrew R. Graybill and Emma M. P\u00e9rez; children\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and YA author J.B. (Jessica) Powers; and photo-historian of award-winning Southwestern <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>cultural histories Bill Wright.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The TIL\u2019s membership consists of the state\u2019s most respected writers\u2014including winners of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, PEN\/Faulkner Award, Academy Award, Americas Award, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>International Latino Book Award, and the MacArthur \u201cGenius\u201d Grant. Membership is based on <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>ongoing and exceptional literary accomplishment. Members of the Texas Institute of Letters have overwhelmingly approved nineteen writers to join the ranks of the TIL.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Carmen Tafolla, president of the Texas Institute of Letters states, \u201cThe move to diversify and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>include a wide variety of literary genres in our analysis of literary accomplishment has continued to bring us a rich base of outstanding word-crafters. We are extremely proud of the exceptional work these individuals represent. These nineteen literary masters and innovators span the creative gamut from stage plays to song lyrics and from novels to poetry, journalism, short stories, publishing, children\u2019s works, and scholarly books.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New members will be inducted at the upcoming TIL annual meeting, to be held in Georgetown, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Texas, March 27-29. The Annual TIL Literary Awards will also be presented at the weekend\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>events. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
