Lone Star Literary Life Publisher Kristine Hall and Managing Editor Michelle Newby Lancaster were on hand for four+&nbsp;days of author panels, book signings, and parties that kept everyone warm. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Pre-con events began the evening of Wednesday, October 30th, with \u201cA Celebration of Reading.\u201d The Lone Star Lit Team was in attendance as <em>New York Times<\/em> bestselling author <strong>David Morrell <\/strong>interviewed noted literacy philanthropist and the world\u2019s bestselling author <strong>James Patterson<\/strong>. Proceeds from the dinner and silent auction benefited Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Panels and programs began in full force the next morning and ran through early Sunday afternoon. Naturally, the Lone Star team sought out those sessions that promised Texas connections, and Bouchercon didn\u2019t disappoint with options, including: &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/IMG_E0252.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:left; height:164px; margin:2px; width:175px\" \/>*Texas author <strong>Deborah Crombie<\/strong>, Local Guest of Honor, was interviewed by <strong>Lucy Burdette<\/strong> about her mystery series set in England, the newest (number eighteen) installment of which is Bitter Feast. Crombie fell in love with the UK in 1976 and dealt with her homesickness for her favorite place by writing books set in England so she could live there \u201cin her head.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">*In \u201cThe Future of Feminist Mysteries,\u201d <strong>Molly Odintz, Steph Cha, Emily Giglierno, Lori Rader-Day, Sarah Weinman, and Juliet Grames<\/strong> ditched the official description and riffed on the past, present, and future of the feminist mystery, declared \u201clikeability\u201d irrelevant, and debated the Staunch Prize.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">*In the \u201cCrossing Genres\u201d panel, Texas authors <strong>Christopher Brown and Andy Davidson<\/strong> talked about combining dystopia, legal thrillers, police procedurals, and monsters.&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/IMG_E0269.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:169px; margin:2px; width:150px\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/IMG_E0270.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:174px; margin:2px; width:150px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">*Dallas\u2019s <strong>Harry Hunsicker<\/strong>, Guest of Honor and emcee, was interviewed by <strong>David Morrell<\/strong> of <em>First Blood<\/em> fame, among many other works. This was the topic of \u201cHome on the Range\u201d with <strong>Kay Kendall, Rebecca Adler, Alexandra Burt, Larry Enmon, Kathleen Kent, and Reavis Z. Wortham<\/strong>. Lansdale, Brad Parks, Tom Pitts, and Phillip Thompson<\/strong> discussed \u201cThe Lone Hero: Neo-Westerns and Westerns,\u201d during which Lansdale offered this writing advice, \u201cWrite as if everyone you know is dead.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">*During \u201cI Won&#8217;t Write That,\u201d <strong>Oline Cogdill, Gray Basnight, Steven Cooper<\/strong>, Frisco\u2019s <strong>Melissa Lenhardt, Catriona McPherson, and Andrew Welsh-Huggins,<\/strong> contrary to the canard quoted in the panel description to \u201cnever kill an animal,\u201d unanimously decided that they probably would if it advances the story.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Whil<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/Table%20trio.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:left; height:182px; margin:2px; width:175px\" \/>e deep discussions were happening in the various conference rooms of the Hyatt Regency, Bouchercon Partner Lone Star Literary Life set-up shop at a table across from registration. Lone Star Lit Blogger Team members Leslie Storey and Kelly<\/span><\/span><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/Hannibal.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:201px; margin:2px; width:150px\" \/><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"> Moore pitched in to<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"> help greet and inform readers, publishers, authors, and even a few \u201cpre-published authors\u201d of LSLL\u2019s mission and services \u2013 and a Lone Star tote bag filled with twenty books and audiobooks was given away to one lucky winner who visited the table. The good luck continued as<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Houston author <strong>James Hannibal<\/strong>, whose book <em>The Gryphon Heist<\/em> (Revell) was recently featured on Lone Star blog tour, was stationed at the adjacent ITW table. Kristine was able to do an impromptu interview with Hannibal, who shared details about <em>Chasing the White Lion<\/em>, the next book in his Talia Inger series, his synethesia, and more. Kristine said the interview began something like this:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Patterson<\/strong>: So, what are we doing here?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Kristine<\/strong> (quite seriously): Oh. I thought you had an outline or something.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Patterson<\/strong>: *crickets*<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Kristine <\/strong>(giggles): I&#8217;m kidding. But honestly, I apologize for not being prepared. You weren&#8217;t on my radar until last night.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Patterson <\/strong>(quite seriously): Oh. You hadn&#8217;t heard of me before?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">And so it went.&nbsp; The interview was more chat then Q&amp;A, with&nbsp;Kristine fangirling a bit about the first time she heard Patterson speak &#8212; at the Texas Library Association Conference some years ago in a city neither of them could remember (more bonding) &#8212; and how impressed she is by the magnitude of his<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/Texas%20Outlaw.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:232px; margin:2px; width:150px\" \/> benevolence and support of libraries and librarians. Patterson reiterated his distress at the ridiculously low percentage of kids reading on level, and explained why he&#8217;s put so much time, energy, and funding into literacy initiatives.&nbsp;Kristine shifted gears and asked about Patterson&#8217;s new contemporary Texas Ranger series (<em>Texas Outlaw<\/em> is coming in March). Why Texas Rangers? &#8220;Why not &#8212; they are always interesting, aren&#8217;t they?&#8221; As time was running short, in a panic, Kristine launched a series of rapid-fire questions and found out:&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">&#8211; at any time, Patterson has thirty to thirty-five manuscripts on the shelf in his office, all works-in-progress, including fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, and TV episodes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">-his current nonfiction WIP is about John Lennon<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">-deadlines are not an issue for him; he&#8217;s never missed one<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">-he wants each of his co-authors to be &#8220;emotionally invested&#8221; in the story they are writing together<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">-he has &#8220;monster ideas&#8221; and a monster IQ to match (but not a monster ego &#8212; Kristine said Patterson is a down-to-earth, easy-going person)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/IMG_6622.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:131px; margin:2px; width:175px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Friday night was the Denim Celebration, with a barbecue dinner, a live auction (LSLL scored the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jungleredwriters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jungle Red Writers<\/strong><\/a> \u201cRed for a Day\u201d Gift Box, which includes a day on the blog in December), and a dance demonstration from Fort Worth\u2019s own bestselling author <strong>Sandra Brown.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/Royal%20Chef.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:left; height:199px; margin:2px; width:150px\" \/>Saturday afternoon was the Librarians&#8217;&nbsp;Tea, designed to&nbsp;honor librarians.&nbsp;<strong>Hank Phillippi Ryan<\/strong> delivered a welcome to the librarians and quoted Kelly Moore, our very own Lone Star Lit Blogger Team Member (and DFW librarian). Tears were shed.&nbsp;A traditional English tea was prepared for attendees, and the guest speaker was The Royal Chef, <strong>Darren McGrady<\/strong> \u2014 the highly entertaining former personal chef for both the Queen of England and Princess Diana and her sons and author of several cookbooks.
