The Austin Book Arts Center (ABAC)<\/a><\/strong> is excited to announce that registration has begun for the new fall schedule, with over forty bookbinding and printing workshops for children and adults. Visitors can drop in to enjoy refreshments and door prizes. Volunteers are onsite to lead demonstrations in bookbinding and letterpress printing. No batteries required.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The indomitable Ms. Durrie is once again hitting the open road in her \u201cMoveable Type\u201d truck for a tour of the southern states. She will be setting up shop at the Austin Book Arts Center during the Fall Open House to engage visitors with letterpress demos and a stunning array of letterpress printed merchandise.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the second tour of the \u201cMoveable Type\u201d truck. Back in 2011-2013, Durrie traveled around the country in this same truck, with the mission of sharing the craft of letterpress printing. She is visiting small towns and big cities to spread the good word about printing the old-fashioned way, by hosting public pop-ups, letterpress demos, and letter-writing events along the way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

BOOKBINDING ONE<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Students will learn the fundamentals of bookbinding by making <\/span><\/span><\/span>three structures: one non-adhesive binding (the historical long <\/span><\/span><\/span>stitch binding), a flat back case binding, and box to house one of <\/span><\/span><\/span>these structures. Discussions about grain direction, paper folding, <\/span><\/span><\/span>adhesives and tools will be incorporated during the class.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

JAPANESE BOOKBINDING<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Join us for a fun day long course on Japanese Bookbinding. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Students will make two Japanese bound books using fabric and <\/span><\/span><\/span>paper covers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

BOOK REPAIR ONE<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this two-day class, students will be guided through evaluating <\/span><\/span><\/span>damage to books and manuscripts, decisions on repairs needed <\/span><\/span><\/span>and who best to perform them, as well as tips on handling, storage, <\/span><\/span><\/span>and environmental concerns. Students will learn a few basic repair <\/span><\/span><\/span>techniques such as paper mending, spine repairs and rejoining <\/span><\/span><\/span>texts to their covers if separated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LONG STITCH LEATHER JOURNAL<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You will go <\/span><\/span><\/span>home with four examples of book-binding projects, made by you, <\/span><\/span><\/span>and ready to show-and-tell your classroom, inspiring them to create <\/span><\/span><\/span>their own masterpieces!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
