Announcement of kid lit and YA authors attending the 2019 Texas Book Festival<\/p>\n

This week the Texas Book Festival announced the full list of children\u2019s and young adult authors who will appear at this year\u2019s festival on October 26 and 27. Headliners this year include internationally best-selling and award-winning author of Wonder<\/em>, R.J. Palacio<\/strong>, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor<\/strong>, and critically acclaimed young adult author Rainbow Rowell<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, Kids on Congress will feature the award-winning author of the middle-grade Treehouse series, Andy Griffiths<\/strong>, best-selling poet and Newbery Award-winning author Kwame Alexander<\/strong>, graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier, <\/strong>Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, <\/strong>and more. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Every year at the Festival we turn Congress Avenue into Kids On Congress: an energetic thoroughfare of book talks, author signings, and activities for kids and children\u2019s literature lovers of all ages,” says TBF Literary Director Julie Wernersbach. “We have so many amazing authors we can\u2019t keep it all contained to Congress Avenue. This year, you\u2019ll find children\u2019s and YA authors in the Kirkus Reviews tent on Eleventh Street and at First United Methodist Church on Colorado Street. You\u2019ll also find bilingual story times and panels in our Latinx Lit tent.”     <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

R.J. Palacio<\/span><\/span><\/strong> will speak about and sign her new graphic novel, White Bird<\/em>, based on the world and characters of Wonder<\/em>, on Saturday, October 26. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor<\/strong> will speak about and sign her new picture book, Just Ask<\/em>, on Sunday, October 27. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The festival weekend kicks off Kids on Congress with an epic Graphix Con panel featuring acclaimed middle grade graphic novelists at First United Methodist Church, including Raina Telgemeier, Gale Galligan,<\/strong> and Molly Knox Ostertag<\/strong>. They\u2019ll talk about their new books and the art of creating captivating graphic novels that young readers love.      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

• For the youngest readers, <\/strong>the Read Me a Story tent <\/strong>will feature stories read aloud by top authors and illustrators, such as Judy Schachner<\/strong>, Duncan Tonatiuh,<\/strong> and Ra\u00fal the Third.<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  • The Next Chapter tent <\/strong>will feature notable middle-grade chapter book authors on fun panels, including Maulik Pancholy<\/strong>, Gordon Korman<\/strong>, Daniel Jos\u00e9 Older, Stu Gibbs<\/strong>, Juana Medina<\/strong>, Lisa McMann, Tom Angleberger,<\/strong> and more. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • This year, the YA HQ tent<\/strong> will be <\/strong>filled with amazing panels and authors, including sessions with Maureen Johnson<\/strong>, L.L. McKinney<\/strong>, Mariko Tamaki<\/strong>, Hafsah Faizal<\/strong>, Tiffany Jackson<\/strong>, Lilliam Rivera<\/strong>, and many more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • The Latinx Lit tent <\/strong>will feature bilingual story time in English and Spanish, along with a special conversation between Tom\u00e1s Rivera Mexican American Children\u2019s Book Award-winners Yuyi Morales<\/strong> and David Bowles<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Returning this year in the center of the festival is the massive tent in partnership with Kirkus Reviews <\/em>that will be home to a variety of great programming for kids and young adults, including a compelling conversation with Rainbow Rowell<\/strong> about her latest novel, Wayward Son<\/em>, the highly anticipated sequel to Carry On; <\/em>and a special spotlight conversation with author Ruta Sepetys<\/strong> about her engrossing, page-turning new historical novel set in late 1950s Spain, The Fountains of Silence<\/em>. Also grab a seat to go \u201castro-nuts\u201d with Jon Scieszka <\/strong>and Steven Weinberg<\/strong> as they share the first book in their brand-new series, AstroNuts Mission One: The Plant Planet<\/em>, and then stick around to climb up into the 117-Story Treehouse<\/em> with Andy Griffiths<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • When I Was a Kid: Writing Books Inspired by Our Childhoods<\/span><\/span><\/strong> – Newbery Award-winner Meg Medina<\/strong>, best-selling author Ibi Zoboi,<\/strong> and Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad <\/strong>will take the stage to share their latest books, all fictional stories inspired in different ways by their childhoods. This is a panel with major star power, featuring three of the biggest names in children\u2019s literature who inspire kids with their words every day. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

          • Writing the Civil Rights Movement for Kids <\/span><\/span><\/strong>– Sharon Robinson, <\/strong>best-selling author and the daughter of baseball player Jackie Robinson, will be joined by Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Jerry Pinkney<\/strong> and author Barry Wittenstein<\/strong> to discuss their new books that remember and celebrate the civil rights movement.  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
