Half of the forty essays, columns, and speeches in the book initially graced the magazine\u2019s pages.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781477318683?aff=LoneStarLit\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/05a%20recent%20studies%20indicate.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:left; height:427px; margin:5px; width:275px\" \/><\/a>She groups the pieces into four sections covering \u201cWomanhood,\u201d \u201cTexas,\u201d &nbsp;\u201cMotherhood,\u201d and \u201cWriting,\u201d and you can open the book to just about any story and enjoy a few minutes of good reading and, more likely than not, a hearty laugh.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">In the section on Writing, one hilarious piece tells about how she popped two sleeping pills<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">thinking they were her blood pressure tablets<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">just before she was supposed to lead a panel at the 2012 Texas Book Festival. She conked out and completely slept through the session<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">and the rest of the day. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Another essay, written in 2005, deals with book clubs. \u201cWhich of these clubs is most likely to be fun? Quill and Swill; Wine, Women, and Diphthong; Happy Bookers; Reading Between the Wines; The Book Bags; Overreaders Anonymous \u2026 or the East Wickinsham Literary Society? If you picked the last one, prepare to hear phrases like \u2018underlying theme\u2019 and \u2018character development.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">I\u2019m sure librarians applauded vigorously when she spoke at the 2017 Texas Library Association convention. Bird said when she was asked by <em>Good Housekeeping <\/em>magazine, \u201cWhat are you most grateful for?\u201d she answered: \u201cMy library card.\u201d She explained: \u201cEvery hurdle I have ever faced in life, I have researched my way over at a library. I am deeply and eternally grateful for that part of the American spirit that believes every citizen should have access to books.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Bird has written ten novels and one other non-fiction book, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781477309490?aff=LoneStarLit\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Love Letter to Texas Women<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.
