So I\u2019m delighted to see that TCU Press has brought out a collection of his cartoons, <em>The Star of the Telegram: The Cartoons of Harold Maples<\/em>, selected and organized by Devin McCue ($24.95 paperback).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/05a%20the%20star%20of%20the%20telegram.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:left; height:345px; margin:5px; width:275px\" \/>I still cherish a cartoon Harold presented to me when I left the <em>Star-Telegram <\/em>to become editor of the <em>Bryan-College Station Eagle<\/em>. He had A&amp;M\u2019s Ol\u2019 Sarge welcoming me with open arms back to Aggieland.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">While working on his senior honors thesis in history at TCU, McCue discovered the TCU library\u2019s extensive Harold Maples Collection and began delving into the cartoons and the history and issues they represented.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">From more than seven thousand&nbsp;illustrations, McCue selected about 150 cartoons grouped into six broad categories\u2013Cold War, Fort Worth, Politics, Sports, Vietnam, and Uncle Sam. Each cartoon gets its own page in the book, with a few lines by McCue providing context.&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Maples, who grew up in Fluvanna in West Texas, was the <em>Star-Telegram<\/em>\u2019s morning edition cartoonist for twenty-seven years, beginning in the 1950s. He died in 1981.&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>Texas Rangers: <\/strong>The University of Oklahoma Press has issued <em>The Texas Rangers in Transition: From Gunfighters to Criminal Investigators, 1921-1935<\/em> by Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler ($34.95 hardcover, 656 pages).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">The new title is a sequel to the two authors\u2019 earlier work, <em>The Texas Rangers and the Mexican Revolution: The Bloodiest Decade, 1910-1920<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/05b%20texas%20rangers%20in%20transition001.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:2px; float:right; height:395px; margin:5px; width:275px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Now they track the Rangers during oil boom days and Prohibition, with a rash of bank robberies, the growth of the Ku Klux Klan, in-state political upheaval, and numerous other challenges.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cTexas in the years 1921-35 was a violent place, figuratively awash in booze and oil,\u201d the authors write. \u201cThese years constitute a significant but relatively neglected period in the history of the Texas State Ranger Force.
