Moore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\"> gives readers a guided tour of&nbsp;abandoned&nbsp;tiny Texas jails in his new book,&nbsp;<\/span><em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/search-results\/?keyword=Texas-Calaboose-and-Other-Forgotten-Jails\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">The Texas Calaboose and Other Forgotten Jails<\/span><\/a><\/u><span style=\"color:#000000\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color:#000000\">(Texas A&amp;M University Press, $35 hardcover).&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">A calaboose, or tiny jail, was often used in small towns to&nbsp;incarcerate prisoners on an overnight or temporary basis until they could sleep off their inebriation, pay their fine, or be taken&nbsp;before a judge or transferred to a larger facility.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">Moore discusses the history of the calaboose, but most of the book consists of an alphabetical listing\u2014with&nbsp;color&nbsp;photographs&nbsp;and a page or so of text\u2014of about 120 calabooses, jails, or cages that are no longer used but are still around as storage buildings or abandoned structures.&nbsp;Many are on private property.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cAlthough the majority of prisoners who spent time in the local calaboose were the Saturday night drunks and ruffians,\u201d Moore writes, \u201cothers were locked up for theft, counterfeiting, owning or discharging illegal firearms, prostitution, and selling fortunes without a license.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cA night in the local calaboose,\u201d he adds, \u201cwas not a pleasant experience even when electricity and other amenities were available.
